Overland Park’s Initiatives to Enhance Housing Affordability and Community Safety

Overland Park is actively pursuing initiatives to address housing affordability and enhance community safety, reflecting its commitment to residents’ well-being.

Advancing Housing Affordability

In April 2026, the City Council approved the Portfolio Homes pilot program, offering 26 pre-approved home designs, including single-family and duplex options. This program aims to streamline the approval process and reduce costs for developers, facilitating the construction of smaller, more attainable homes. Building permit fees are waived for approved applications, encouraging the development of housing that caters to first-time homebuyers and those seeking more affordable options.

Additionally, Overland Park is considering a partnership with a Kansas City housing nonprofit to develop single-family homes and duplexes on city-owned land. These homes are projected to be priced around $400,000, below the city’s average new home price of $500,000, thereby expanding housing options for residents.

Enhancing Community Safety

To improve road safety, Overland Park launched the Safe Streets Plan in February 2026. This initiative focuses on reducing traffic crashes, injuries, and fatalities by identifying and addressing high-risk areas. As part of this plan, the city is installing ‘street cushions’—large speed bumps designed to slow traffic—in four locations: 87th and Hadley, 101st and Lamar, 133rd and Grant, and Metcalf and Edgewater. This pilot program aims to assess the effectiveness of these measures in enhancing road safety.

Through these initiatives, Overland Park demonstrates its dedication to fostering a safer and more inclusive community for all residents.
